Meet Doug Smith
Doug Smith’s original
instrumental compositions have been heard on radio and TV stations
throughout the world, including CNN, ESPN, E!, The Discovery Channel,
and Encore; his playing has been heard on the soundtracks of movies
and television shows such as "Twister" and "Moll Flanders",
the “Martha Stewart Show” and he has performed on the
nationally syndicated radio programs "Echoes", "West
Coast Live", and "River City Folk.”
Doug Smith received a 2005 Grammy Award in the Best Pop Instrumental
category this year for his arrangement and performance of
the Henry Mancini song “It’s Easy to Say” on the
recording “The Pink Guitar.” During the past year his
instructional DVD and companion songbook Contemporary Instrumental
Guitar released by Warner Brothers. Both contain many of his
most popular original solo guitar pieces.
Doug’s music combines folk, classical, jazz and contemporary
forms with virtuoso guitar technique to create a unique, flowing and
highly melodic fingerpicking style. Of his playing and composing,
Billboard Magazine wrote "Inviting melodic…Stunning fingerpicking",
and Acoustic Guitar Magazine wrote "As beautiful as any instrumental
pieces you will ever hear".
Doug records for Solid Air Records. He has numerous CDs to his credit
including a Best Of recording, a Christmas CD and the recently released
Alone Again, the follow up to his best selling Alone at Last. Besides
his solo albums, Doug has contributed to several of American Gramophone’s
popular "Dayparts" series: "Sunday Morning Coffee"
I & II, "Romance" I & II, and "Dinner".
He lives and teaches in Portland, Oregon.
